Plaque 1 - The Castle of Comares

This introduces the Castle of Comares, HisN Qumarix, the name used in early Nazari texts.

The plaque shows a general view of the fortress and its alcazaba (castle) up to the end of the 15th Century. It was a stronghold that was well-known for its powerful Arab governors who, together with those from Málaga and Guadix, gave so much trouble to the Kings of Granada.

An oasis for travellers, Comares became a powerful and rebellious village whose support was sought by the most distinguished kings.

From the square, turn left, and follow the footsteps up the hill…
