The Mozarabe leader, Omar ben Hafsun, extended his authority throughout eastern Andalucia, creating a state that had its capital in Bobastro (near Antequerra). The aim was to overthrow the Omeya dynasty and create a national state. During his advance through the region of Málaga he recognised the importance of the area and took possession of the castles of Mijas and Comares.
On the plateau of nearby Mazmullar there was a Mozarabe village that may have been a refuge for Omar and his supporters.
Walk up through the town and turn right, heading back down the hill in the direction of the main square.
