Plaque 8 - Bastion of Comares

The ancient rocky vantage point of Comares is surrounded by natural defences of escarpments and slopes that do not show many signs of the past. There are, however, traces of fortifications undoubtedly associated with the famous Castle of Comares. During the Muslim occupation the castle was transformed into a large fort that occupied and surrounded the mountain where the town and cemetery are now situated. There are few remains of this era but the most impressive is La Tahona (lit. flour mill), the remains of the great wall which surrounded the original Castle.

Continue downhill and turn left. You will find that you are back where you started, in the main square. Time for a drink, a few tapas, and a siesta…
